Rawle Borel Jr., is an accomplished communications practitioner, public speaker, executive coach and corporate event strategist.
With more than 12 years experience, Rawle has held a variety of senior and strategic roles. Beginning his career in the entertainment and not-for-profit arenas, Rawle led promotions and external relations activities for Denver, Colorado-based Up With People. Taking him to points across the U.S., Canada and Western Europe, this experience provided Rawle with unique business insights and global perspectives as he executed high-profile public relations and publicity campaigns for this organization and its event sponsors.
In 1996, Rawle returned to Canada where he began his ten-year career with Rogers Communications Inc. – Canada’s largest communications, entertainment and information provider. At Rogers, Rawle held increasingly senior roles that utilized his skills in business leadership, budget assignment, corporate events and strategic planning as he worked closely with senior organizational leaders. His most recent role at Rogers was that of Director, Communications for Rogers Customer Care. In this role, Rawle led the communications support around specific activities that included: executive town-hall meetings, Annual General Meetings, product launches, workforce re-structuring, corporate giving strategies, media relations, employee engagement and executive media coaching.
In May 2006, Rawle launched Sugarfoote Communications – a business communications and corporate event management service provider based in Toronto, Canada. Since launching Sugarfoote, his client base has grown to include small businesses, multi-national organizations and government agencies.
Rawle has built a reputation as a proven leader, business communicator, trusted advisor and strategist. As a result his experiences and knowledge, he continues to be invited to speak at communications and business conferences throughout Canada and the United States. Rawle believes that communicators play a critical role in adding to the bench-strength at the executive “strategic table” as an organization strives to improve its bottom line. He also believes this goal can only be realized when two factors work in combination:
- When communications efforts are utilized as part of an integrated approach to an organization’s strategy; and
- When communications practitioners and corporate event strategists ensure they are intimately knowledgeable of the business attributes of the organization which they intent to support.
Rawle has a Bachelor’s degree in business communications from Brock University and a public relations certificate from Humber College.
Playing an active role in the community, Rawle has provided communications and event management support to Covenant House (Toronto), the Toronto Advisory Board on Race Relations, Casey House Hospice and Canadian Blood Services. In 2005/2006, Rawle served as the president of the Toronto chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) – the 1,300 member-strong chapter is the largest business communications association chapter in the world. In 2007/2008, Rawle will lead IABC’s Canada East Region, overseeing the communications association activities for more than 3,000 communications practitioners in Canada and the Caribbean. Rawle is also a dedicated fundraiser for United Way of Greater Toronto – organizing corporate events that helped to raise more than $800,000 over a six-year period.
In his personal time, Rawle enjoys continuing his global learning through traveling with his wife, Abiola, and his dog, Kitch.
